BALLOON VALVULOPLASTY VERSUS CLOSED AND OPEN COMMISSUROTOMY IN SURGICAL MANAGEMENT OF ,. ' ISOLATED MITRAL VALVE STENOSIS

Khairy Mohamed Gaballah;

Abstract

Rheumatic mitral stenosis IS one of the commonest valvular disease in Egypt and other developed countries.

Mitral commissurotomy has been used successfully for many years to u•eat patients with mitral stenosis.

This study aimed to compare and evaluate the results and the effects of three techniques through analysis of three. groups of patients who underwent balloon mitral commissurotomy, closed miu•al commissurotomy and open mitral commissura- tomy respectively.

These patients were, from the clinical and morphological point of view, optimal candidates for both balloon and surgical commissurotomy (closed or open) procedures as demonstrated by •a mean age of :::;; 30 years, absence of mitral valve calcification on 2D echocardiography and an echocardio graphic score :::;; 8 in all patients.

The reliability of the echocardiographic score of predicting results of commissurotomy is not optimal because results of commissurotomy are also re.lated to other factors such as the age arid sex of the patient, the presence of atrial fibrillation, mitral regurgitation and pulmonary hypertension,
