COMPARATIVE STUDY OF TOPICAL DICLOFENAC VERSUS PREDNISOLONE FOR CONTROL OF POST-CATARACT INFLAMMATION

Abstract

The introduction of topical corticosteroids has made a revolutionary improvement in the postoperative course of ophthalmic surgery.

Unfortunately, locally used corticosteroids have many side effects mainly delayed wound healing and reduced resistance to viral, bacterial and fungal infection. They may also raise the intraocular pressure and may produce cataract.

For all the above side effects we are looking now for anti-inflammatory agents that g1ve the benefits of corticosteroid therapy, avoiding its harmful side effects. di- clofenac sodium 0.1% eye drops, a non-steroidal anti- inflammatory agent, is a potent inhibitor of cyclo-oxygenase pathway, which is involved in the first step of prostaglandins synthesis. The drug reduces inflammation and maintains the blood-aqueous barrier.
