Abstract


Acutepainisoneofthemostcommonadversestimuliexperiencedbypediatricpopulationasaresultofsurgery,illness,anyinjuryandnecessarymedicalprocedure.Painisassociatedwithincreasedanxiety,avoidance,somaticsymptoms,andincreasedparentdistressandmay leadtolongtermeffects.

Severalexpertssuggestthattheneonate’sexpressionofpaindoesnotfitwithinthestrictdefinitionoftheInternationalAssociationforStudyofPainbecauseoftherequirementforself-report.Thislackofabilitytoreportpaincontributestothefailuretorecognizeandtreatpainaggressivelyduringinfancyandearlychildhood.

Becauseneonatescannotverbalizetheirpain,theydependonotherstorecognize,assess,andmanagetheirpain.Therefore,healthcareprofessionalscandiagnoseneonatalpainonlybyrecognizingtheneonate’sassociatedbehavioralandphysiologicalresponses.

Recognitionandassessmentofpainisthefirstandmostimportantstepinsuccessfulpainmanagement.Painshouldbeassessedonaregularbasisusingself-report,behavioralobservationandphysiologicmeasures,bearinginmindtheageofthechildandhisorhercommunicationcapabilities.Therearemanydifferentscalesthatcanbeusedindifferentagegroups.Itisofimportancetouseascalethatisfeasibleintheclinicalsetting.

Painhasbeenclassifiedintotwodifferentmajortypes fast painandslowpainandtransmissionofpainoccursthroughdifferentneurotransmitters.
