PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF SOME POLYMER COLLOIDS
SAMIA MOHAMED HELMY EL-SIGENY;
Abstract
The present work involves the preparation anc:j characteriZation of some polymer colloids by emulsion polymerization technique using ionic comonomers or polymerizable surfactants.
Cationic polystyrene latexes (SL-1 - SL-8) and poly (methyl methacrylate) latexes, (ML-1 - ML-10) containing quaternary ammonium sites have been prepared by batch emulsion copolymerization process using [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyloctadecylammonium bromide 45 as polymerizable surfactant and 2,2'-azobis(2-amidinoproane)dihydro chloride 14 as initiator. All latexes were stable and were purified by ultrafilteration through 0.1 11m membranes. The amount of the polymerizable surfactant 45 incorporated in the latexes was determined by elemental microanalysis and by measurement of the bromide ion content in the latexes by Volhard method.
Measurements of the average particle diameters of the procjuced latexes by transmission electron micrographs showed that all latexes were polydisperse.
The effect of varying initiator, polymerizable surfactant ancj monomer concentrations as well as reaction temperature on the average particle diameters ofthe latexes has been investigated. The average particle diameters have been found to decrease with increasing the concentration of initiator or polymerizable surfactant and to increase with increasing the monomer concentration and increasing the reaction temperature.
