Abstract

Leptin, the product of the ob gene, the honnone produced from the adipocytes, regulating energy expenditure, satiety adiposity and activity.

In our study, the basic ann is to measure deptin in maternal venous blood and cord blood and compare them in relation to body weight and gender.

Thirty pregnant females with their fetal outcome were our study group in Ain Shams University, department of gynecology and obstetrics.

Their venous blood and cord blood were collected after delivery together with full medical history, weight and height ten non pregnant females were our control group from Ain Shams University clinic of obstetrics and gynecology, where venous blood together with full history was taken from them.

Leptin was measured using ELIZA technique and results were compared and correlated to each other.

Our study proved that leptin is directly proportional to body weight and body mass index, through higher levels of lepti.J;l detected in pregnant females than non pregnant females, in obese mother than lean mothers and in babies whose weights are large for gestational age than to babies whose weights are small and appropriate for gestational age.

Gender difference was proved through detecting higher level of leptin in female neonates than male neonate and in
