Abstract

Ankle pain involves any discomfort in one or both ankles.Ankle pain is often due to an ankle sprain. In addition to ankle sprains and other injuries, ankle pain can be caused by arthritis, gout, The types of arthritis that can cause ankle pain include (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic gouty arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and septic arthritis).
Various imaging techniques may be used to assess the ankle, including plain radiography ,CT, MRI, and sonography.
Musculoskeletal ultrasound has been shown to be helpful in the evaluation of joint, tendon, muscle, bursa, bone, and other soft tissue abnormalities. It has the ability to directly visualize, characterize, and quantify the earliest and smallest inflammatory and structural changes. These qualities can help also in directing appropriate treatment and monitoring response and disease progression.
Numerous pathologic processes of the ankle can be diagnosed with use of magnetic resonance imaging. Magnetic resonance imaging allows for high-resolution evaluation of not only the osseous structures of the ankle joint but also the soft-tissue structures including muscles, ligaments, and tendons. There are multiple imaging techniques and pulse sequences with which to evaluate the ankle joint.
It is unfortunate that most comparisons of US and MR imaging put these modalities at odds with one another rather than emphasizing their complementary roles in assessing musculoskeletal pathology. There is clearly considerable overlap between these two modalities, where they may be used interchangeably to make a diagnosis. Examples include the Achilles tendon . There are also situations, however, Where one or another modality may be more appropriate to address a specific issue, or where the addition of another study is beneficial in making a specific diagnosis or impacts clinical outcome (as twisting injury ).
Our study included fifty patients complaining of ankle pain. All patients were subjected to real time high resolution ultrasonography and MRI of th
