EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF THE LATERAL DISPLACEMENT ,OF A KEYED RIGID.CANTILEVER RETAINING WALL UNDER EFFECT OF VERTICAL STRIP LOAD

Amr Ahmed Hemada;

Abstract

In general there is no direct theoretically or experimentally based procedures available for analysis and evaluation of keyed rigid cantilever retaining walls subjected to surface surcharges. Some researchers such as Huntington (1957) who performed limit analysis on a cantilever retaining wall subjected to earth pressure due to backfill only. EL-Sakhawy (1980), (1989) and Abouleid et al. (1991) investigated experimentally the effect of key on the stability of retaining walls under effect of to earth pressure due to backfill only. Theory of elasticity ofBoussinesq is usually used to estimate the lateral stress distribution due to surface surcharges. Terzaghi (1954), Teng (1962) and others modified Boussinesq equations based on experimental tests conducted on rigid non-yielding retaining walls, thus their solutions must be limited to the same case.
