STUDY OF EVALUATION OF RESULTS OF TREATMENT OF FEMORAL FRACTURES IN CHILDREN BY ELASTIC PINS.

Abstract


Between September 2000 and October 2001, twenty children with femoral shaft fracture were treated operatively by titanium elastic rods in the department of orthopaedic surgery and traumatology of Assiut University hospital. There were eleven boys and nine girls. These patients were followed up until clinical and radiological union was evident. The follow up period was at least 6 months.
The overall results were:

Excellent in 100%, according to Nccr's classification of functional outcome of treatment of femoral shaft ti•actures.
From the result of this study we can conclude the following:

Femoral shaft fractures are more common in boys than girls. Male to


female ratio was 1.2:l.


Fracture of the femoral shaft requtre major trauma as falling li•om height or motor vehicle accidents.
All fractures of the femoral shaft are closed fractures and there was no


. intro operative blood transfusion and the patient did not need blood transfusion either in closed or open techniques of reduction of the li•acturc.
The mean healing time for femoral shaft fracture treated by titanium elastic rods was 4 weeks.
