Abstract


This study was conducted to assess the quality of nursing care provided for the elderly patients in two hospitals in Alexandria (Main University Hospital and Gamal Abd El Naser Hospital).

Study population and sampling were as follows:

The study population and sample comprised the following two groups:

- All nurses working in the study units.

- All patients aged 60 and over admitted to the selected units during a period of one and half months for each unit, except one section in Gamal hospital, where the study extended to three months as the section comprises both males and females together.

Tools developed and used for data collection:

- Webster Barthel Scale and Mini Mental Test were used to assess the nursing care needs of the elderly patients.

- Tools for assessment of quality of nursing care provided to elderly patients

(structure, process, out come).

- Tools to assess knowledge, attitude, and opinion of the nurses toward elderly patient and opinion of the nurses regarding barriers to providing adequate nursing care to the hospitalized elderly.

The study revealed the following results:

The study comprised 169 patients (92 in University hospital and 77 in Gamal hospital).
