STUDY OF SOME ENDOCRINAL ASPECTS IN EGYPTIAN DUODENAL-ULCER PATIENTS

Mohamed El- Maadawy;

Abstract

Out of gut hormones, gastrin and somatostatin have been considered important factors in the development and healing of peptic ulcer. Most of studies done on G-, 0-cells. Gastrin or somatostatin was before the era of H. Pylori. After realizing the role of H. pylori in the pathogensis, recurrence and complications of peptic ulcer, the relation between H. Pylori infection, G- and D-cell densities and serum gastrin remains unclear.

The plan of this study was to attempt at discerning the relation between H. Pylori infection and some of the morphological and functional aspects of the interrelated antral G- and D-cells in duodenal ulcer patients as well as the chosen controls, i.e., what is the effect of the H. pylori infection on G- and D-cells morphology (density), and/or function (basal serum gastrin).

We chosen patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia to be our control group, rather than normal volunteers due to ethical reasons.

Each patient, diseased and control, was subjected to upper GIT endoscopy after collecting a fasting blood sample to measure basal gastrin. Two antral mucosal biopsies were taken one for immunohistochemistry and the other for Giemsa and H & E staining.
