Abstract

Abstract
A Quasi experimental design was used to study the effect of ice hand massage on relieving intensity of labor pain. LI4 is located on the medial midpoint of the first Meta carpal within 3to 4cm of web skin between the thumb and fore finger. A Simple random sample "tossing" technique was used to select subjects of the study one hundred fifty primipara women that divided into three equal groups randomly through computer. The first one was the control group, second group received ice hand massage at right hand" meanwhile, "third group received ice hand massage at left hand". Three tools were used as follows: First tool was Official labor document. Second tool was Visual Analogue Scale for pain intensity that used to assess labor pain scores it consisting of FPS With seven facial expressions of pain, from happy (scored 0) to agonized (scored 6), were used. Ask the mother to choose face that best describes own pain and record the appropriate number.). While, third tool was Pain characteristic scale according to McGill pain questionnaire. The scale is comprised of 22 words (18 sensory and 4 affective). The result of present study revealed that mean score for both McGill Pain questionnaire and Visual Analogue are increasing with progress in cervical dilatation in control group. There is no significant difference in mean score for McGill Pain questionnaire between left and right hand ice massage group before intervention. While, there is significant decrease in mean score for McGill Pain questionnaire for left hand ice massage group than right hand ice massage group after intervention with progress in cervical dilatation. The same for Visual Analogue scale. The study results suggest that ice massage is a simple, inexpensive, available a non pharmacological measure for reducing intensity of labor pain.
