Intraoperative blood loss in juvenile angiofibroma resection; Endoscopic approach vs. Open approach Meta-Analysis Study

Salma Al-Shawaf Abdul Azim;

Abstract

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a benign tumor in which the best method of management remains its surgical excision.
Endoscopic resection has been of increasing value during the last two decades since it provides a better modality of approach through better visualization, less morbidiy, less hospitalization, and a lower rate of recurrence especially when there’s no intracranial involvement.

This paper is mainly concerned with comparing the amount of blood loss encountered when using an open approach to that when using an endoscopic approach through a meta-analytic study that showed that there is no major statistical difference between the two approaches when excising a JNA.

However, as previously mentioned, the results could be inconclusive since there is a lack of proper studies with unified grading of tumors, and whether or not preoperative embolization of tumors was performed.
Hence, the need for more studies with more strict unified inclusive criteria as well as randomized controlled trials aimed at this subject topic in order to get better guidance when dealing with such a condition.
