Abstract


As Women differ from men biologically and psychologically, it was a must to consider gender in sceintific medical research , and to stop neglecting women , for irreliable reasons as fear on their health , or fear of getting them pregnant while subjecting whem to clinical studies.

Light is recently starting to focuss on factor of gender as one of the important factors affecting presentation , Course and treatment of psychiatric diseases .

In this work , depression was studied with respect to gender in an Egyptian sample of depressed male and female patients .

The aim of this work , was to explore the importance of gender in depression regarding , vulnerability to depression , presentation of depression , and clinical response to antidepressant medications , through :

1- Reveiwing the available literature on the subject .

2- Evaluating the symptomatology of the depressed subjects included in this study with respect to gender .

3- Evaluating comparatively the clinical response of these subjects to treatment with antidepressant medications regarding improvement and adverse reactions.

Cases , of this study were selected from outpatient clinics of psychiatric military hospital and departments and Abhssyia mental hospital.
