Lidocaine and dexamethasone for Paracervical block anesthesia in women with missed abortion: (Randomized Controlled Trial)

Mohamed Ahmed Abdelalim Darwish;

Abstract

This study was a clinical trial to estimate intraoperative and postoperative analgesic effect of paracervical block with dexamethasone & lidocaine in uterine evacuation of missed abortions using vacuum aspiration, to estimate factors that might affect it and to evaluate possible side effects of paracervical lidocaine injection.
Fifty patients were included in the study; counseling was performed in a waiting room before the procedure so that the patients would be cooperative with researcher. Full medical history and clinical examination were carried out and transvaginal ultrasound was performed as a routine investigation so that none of exclusion criteria could be missed.
After signing the written informed consent. Paracervical block was performed by injection of 10 cc of buffered lidocaine 1% and dexamethasone at each side of cervix at 4 and 8 o’clock in depth of 1 cm with intermittent aspiration to ensure that no blood vessel was punctured. Period of 5 minutes was allowed to pass before onset of the procedure. Uterine evacuation was performed using electrical vacuum aspiration apparatus connected to a Karman canola of appropriate diameter.
