NON-STEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DRIG GASTROPATHYAND ITS RELATION TO HELICOBACTER PYLORI AND OTHER FACTORS
SAMAR HASSONA ABO ELSOUD;
Abstract
NSAIDs have long been known to cause gastroduodenal damage.
In the present work, 40 patients on chronic NSAID use were
compared to a control group of20 healthy individuals.
All cases were subjected to upper endoscopic • examination and biopsies were obtained from the gastric body, antrum, and lesions if present. Histopathologic examination was done for mucosal changes and searching for Helicobacter pylori.
The study also included careful history taking, physical examination and routine lab for both patient and control groups. Regarding the upper endoscopic findings in the patient group,
17 out of 40 ( 42.5% ) showed gastric affection in the form of diffuse gastritis ( 5 cases), antral gastritis ( 7 cases ), fundal gastritis ( 1 case ) and gastric ulcer ( 4 cases ). These results were highly significant when compared to the control group showing gastric affection in 3 out of 20 cases ( 15% ) 2 of them had antral gastritis and the third one showed diffuse gastritis.
On the other hand, 5/20 control subjects (25% ) had distal end oesophagitis, 1/20 (5%) showed bulb duodenitis and 12/20 (60%) had normal endoscopic findings.
