NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION ON FLEXURAL STRENGTH OF CANTILEVERED CIRCULAR STEEL HOLLOW SECTIONS

Abdel-Rahman Mostafa Mohamed El-Mahdy Abdel-Ghaffar;

Abstract

In current design codes, the effect of Length –to Diameter ratio, L/D, is not considered in computing the flexural strength of circular hollow sections. On the other hand, large discrepancies exist between moment strength predicted by current Egyptian, British, Australian and American specifications. Therefore, the flexural capacity of cantilevered circular steel hollow section was investigated using the Finite element method. The numerical model was established using the general purpose finite element software, ANSYS V.11. The numerical solution accounted for material and geometric nonlinearities as well as geometric imperfections. Numerical results were verified by comparison to test results.
