Abstract

Schistosomiasis can be the cause of severe pulmonary vascular lesions that lead to severe morbidity and even death through a syndrome of chronic corpulmonale. The immunopathogenic mechanism of schistosoma! pulmonary arteritis and deposition of circulating immune complexes in pulmonary vasculature has been introduced as an important cause of pulmonary vascular changes in patients with schistosoma! corpulmonale (SCP). Moreover, intravascular coagulation with platelet activation, endothelial dysfunction and local coagulopathy in lung vasculature of SCP patients are important to progression, if not initiation, of pulmonary hypertension.
