Study of the effect of a proton pump inhibitor intake on the intensity of Giardia Iamblia infection
Hend Rashad Saad;
Abstract
Giardiasis is the most common intestinal protozoan parasite worldwide. The response of individual to infection is quite variable and its specific pathogenic mechanisms have not been totally elucidated. However, a tidal wave of information has recently appeared on the function of this protozoan and its interaction with the host. One such important host factor is reduced gastric acidity or achlorhydria which predisposes to symptomatic infection as Giardia trophozoites favour a neutral pH.
