AROTID ARTERY INTIMA-MEDIA THICKNESS IN CHRONIC RENAL FAILURE PATIENTS ON REGULAR HEMODIALYSIS C
Ashraf Ahmed Mohamed;
Abstract
Cardiovascular complications are the major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with chronic renal failure.
The aim of this study was to investigate the carotid arterx intima-media thickness (JMT) and the prevalence of atherosclerosis is in chronic renal failure patients on regular hemodialysis. •
The study included forty patients with chronic failure on regular hemodmlysis and ten age and sex matched normal healthy subjects.
Both the control and patients groups were subjected to (history taking, clinical examination, ECG, Duplex scanning of carotids and 6lood chemistry).
The results of our study were:
•
•
•
(I) (2) (3)
Carotid artery intima-media thickness complex was significantly higher in uremic patients compared to age and sex matcheCI healthy non uremic controls.
There was no significant correlation between carotid TMT
and dialysis duration.
There was no significant correlation betwee_Jl IMT complex and, (blood urea, serum creatinine Ca + , PO4 , triglycerides cholesterol and LDH, HDL cholesterol.
The conclusion was:
Duplex scanning and common carotid artery IMT complex
with a cutoff 0.05 em is a simple non invasive marker to detect early atherosclerosis.
There was no significant correlation between the serum levels of (cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL cholesterol) and IMT complex.
Chronic renal failure patients on regular hemodialysis have increased IMT complex but this is not related to dialysis duration.
