Abstract

The present study !)resents' a systematic analysis of static and dynamics of a plate heat exchanger syslem having a number of heat transfer plates with water enters through one side ;u\d steath condensed on the other side, and suggests available design. and control chemes for this heat exchanger system.

Experimental data have lleen obtained to illustrate and evaluate performance characteristics of hu ped i>arameter counter-current flow plate heat exchanger. The measurements usedl were o.btained from. a plate heat exchanger as a part of a set up located at the. laboratory of chemicaJ engineering department, Technical university of Denma k, Denmark. The heat exchanger is a small water-to-steam counterflow ( Alva-!Laval P2-FH model ). •

It has been proposed to di ide the pl;te heat exchanger into two sections on both sides, and the prop sed n\odels based on direct lumping of the process and on the basis of energy and mass consideration are put in the state space form. The temperature of each secfioh is a model state. The massflows enter in the model through the state matrix. 1

The effects of st aml flow rates on heat transfer coefficients have been study as well as the effects opresence of air with steam on the condensation process.

Models are develop for :he two cases of condensation, i.e. condensation• with and without air. The\ perforinance of these models were experimentally tested at steady state which indicate lthat the proposed models were reliable.

A complete TURBO PASQAL Programs are developed for the aim of thermal performance calcula ion, while M-files are developed for using through MATLAB software in the order. to thsimulation of the models and control of the system purposes.

A correlation for the physidal properties of water, condensate and steam in a function of temperature are. developed and introduced directly into the programs for the aim of convenience in calculation.

Comparison of the cibsed !lop responses to set point changes in the outlet water temperature or in thelcondetisate level inside the exchanger using proportional or proportional plus int gral control based on pole placement technique or linear quadratic optimal co1Jtrol th ory have been made
