SYNTHESIS AND EVALUATION OF SOME COMPOUNDS AS PETROLEUM OILS-WATER EMULSIFIERS

Nadia Abdel-latif Abdel-Mottaleb Sheta;

Abstract

In the present work, mono, di, and triethanolamine salts of dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid were prepared and subjected to four degrees of ethoxylation to give a total of 12 different samples. These samples are aimed to be employed as emulsifiers in crude oil-water emulsions for pipeline transportation.

The prepared samples were characterized by using standard methods of analysis such as infrared and 1H-NMR spectroscopic techniques in order to identify their chemical structures and their
-• different degrees of ethoxylation.

The viscosities of Qarun crude oil-in-water emulsions stabilized by the prepared surfactants were studied. The study revealed that, the viscosity of the crude oil decreases when it was emulsified with water in the form of oil-in-water type of emulsion. The produced crude oil-in-water emulsions are characterized by their low effective viscosities, which facilitate
pipeline transportation of crude oil.

The oil-water interfacial tension was decreased with increasing the surfactant concentration. DS3 samples were found to produce the lowest 1FT and acceptable viscosity suitable for
pipeline transportation.
