"Upper Cretaceous macro-invertebrate fauna from Gebel Shabrawet and El Giddi Pass sections, Egypt"

Manal Sayed Mekawy;

Abstract

The present study deals with the stratigraphy (litho-and biostratigraphy) of the Cenomanian and Turonian rocks of G. Shabrawet and El Giddi Pass areas as well as systematic paleontology and paleoecology of the macro-invertebrate fauna which collected from three sections (El Giddi Pass, G. Tawal and G. Shabrawet).

El Giddi Pass and G. Tawal located in the north western part of Sinai between G. Urn Khosheib to the North and Mitla Pass to the South. The area of study is bounded between Latitudes 30° 5•- 30° 15' N and longitudes 32° 55'- 33° 15' E. G. Shabrawet is located between Suez and Ismailia road, West of the Bitter lakes and is bounded between latitudes
30° 15'- 30° 20' Nand longitudes 32° II'- 32° 22' E.

Lithostratigraphically the sedimentary sequence in El Giddi Pass and G. Tawal could be differentiated into four units which are arranged from base to top as follows:

I- Galala Formation (Late Cenomanian)

The Galala Formation measures about 270 m thick however its base is unexposed. It is unconformably underlain by the Lower Cretaceous Malha Formation. The Galala Formation is mainly built up of intercalated rudist limestone, marl, dolostone and shale. It is highly fossiliferous.

2- Abu Qada Formation (Late Cenomanian-Early Turonian)
The Abu Qada Formation conformably overlies the Galala
Formation of the Cenomanian age and is overlain by the Buttum
Formation of MiddleTuronian age. This rock unit measures about 20 m thick. This Formation built up of fossiliferous marl with hard ledge of grey dolostone.

3- Buttum Formation (Middle Turonian)

The Buttum Formation conformably overlies the Abu Qada Formation and is overlain by the Wata Formation of Late Turonian. It measures about 17 m thick. The Buttum Formation is built up mainly of greenish grey to yellow and reddish. slope fom1er gypsiferous mudstone with thin, lenticular beds and lenses of yellow to brown, hard limestone.
