Biomarkers of Heart Failure Diagnostic and Prognostic Potential

Shams Abou Dief Radi;

Abstract

Heart Failure is a devastating disease with im:n::asing rnuri.alii.y wii.i1iu :;

years of diagnosis.

In an effort to better diagnose HF, intense research has led to the discovery of many potential biomarkers for this debilitating disease. Valuable biomarkers that may be used for prediction, prognosis and diagnosis of HF will be discussed.
These biomarkers include natriuretic peptides, cardenolides, cytokine &

adrenomedullin.

Brain natriuretic peptides emerge as the supenor diagnostic and prognostic marker.
The concept of using a combination of multiple markers based on diagnosis, prognosis, and acute vs. chronic disease is discussed.
Specific imrnunometric assays with acceptable precision and without need for plasma extraction are already commercially available such as IRMA, ELISA and ECL
Abbreviations: HF: Heart Failure, IRMA: lmrnuno radiometric assay, ELISA: Enzyme-linked imrnuno sorbant assay, ECL: Electro chemiluminescence
