Relationship between Assertiveness and Decision Making Abilities among Nurse Managers at University Hospitals
Shireen Shaker Sami Khalil;
Abstract
D ecision making is a critical skill in the workplace. In many financial workplaces, rapid and accurate decisions can make the difference between financial success and failure. In health settings, the ability to make decisions without doubt can actually make the difference between life and death. Good decision making requires assertive behavior and a lot of self-confidence. Those who combine their confidence with the ability to listen and learn from others will increase their decision making abilities over time as they become wiser and more experienced in what they do (Jagg, 2010).
Assertive nurse managers will stand up for their rights while recognizing the rights of others. They are straight forward and know that they are responsible for their thoughts, feelings, and actions. Also, they know their strengths and limitations. Rather than attack or defend, assertive nurses assess, collaborate, support, and remain neutral and non threatening. They can accept challenges and prevent conflict by helping others deal with their own anger (Linda, 2009).
