Abstract

H1N1 2009 was first recognized as a pathogen in March of 2009, when there was a spike in the number of cases of influenza-like illness leading to severe and at times fatal pneumonia. The etiologic agent was then identified as a novel H1N1 influenza A virus, which results from reasortment of swine, bird and human flu viruses genes and subsequently spread rapidly throughout the globe.
The current study was a retrospective study and was conducted on 66 PCR confirmed swine flu cases admitted at Abbassia Chest Hospital from November 2013 to April 2014.There were 24(36.4%) males and 42(63.6%) females.
The most prominent clinical features on admission were cough in 46 patients (69.7%) and fever in 42 patients (63.6%), then dyspnea in 39 patients representing (59%).
The results showed that 31 patients recovered, while 35 patients died, with a mortality rate 53%. There was no significant statistical relation between the age distribution, sex, presence of co morbidity, and duration of illness before hospitalization, and mortality among the studied patients.
