A LINGUISTIC STUDY OF POLITICAL DISCOURSE DURING THE GULF WAR

Neveen Mohamed Yehia;

Abstract

This thesis is an attempt towards applying a linguistic model to political discourse, particularly to President George Bush's political speeches in the Gulf crisis. The research draws upon the model ofHallidayan's (1994) functional grammar. The Hallidayan framework is tested by presenting some selected speeches from Bush's discourse and analyzing them. Thus, the data is analyzed from semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic perspectives to describe the linguistic features of the political speeches under study.
