Maryam Mahmood Muhammed Mahmood;

Abstract

Eclampsia is not only an obstetric complication, but a life threatening one that should be seriously considered and thereafter managed. The goal is to reduce maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. The challenge is to ltlcus the efforts on primary, but more crucial on emergency care services that shall hear a tremendous positive impact on the efficiency of management.

Antenatal care is the strategy while intranatal care is the tactic to reduce maternal morbidity and subsequently mortality. The purpose of antenatal care is not only to maintain the physiological profile of pregnancy, but also to identify patients with risk factors. In addition to nulliparity, risk factors include positive family history of preeclampsia, multiple gestations, chronic hypertension, renal disease, systemic lupus erythematosis and early third trimester preeclampsia m previous pregnancy. Such patients should receive greater attention. The development of hypertension and increasing oedema increases the concern so that such patients should be managed more carefully and frequently at weekly intervals, preferably in a high risk clime.
