SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES DEPENDING ON RENEWABLE ENERGY

Abstract

The research is a study about the ability of applying the renewable energy technologies and its role in reshaping new urban schemes, which had appeared, recently, as a new approach for developing the urban communities, "The Renewable Energy Integrated Community Concepts". It, also, argues that Egypt, at the national and regional levels, has good capabilities in this field. However, there is a need to review the structure of the national renewable energy framework in order to promote its contribution, i.e. renewable energy, into the Egyptian urban context.

Therefore, The methodology of the research is depending on two mam approaches. A theoretical analytical approach, which studies the theoretical backgrounds of the renewable energy, its main features, its relations with sustainable development and its affects on the urban planning and development. This is in addition to a study for some international examples, which was developed in order to create communities using 100% renewable energy. The second approach is a practical one, which contains an analysis for the Egyptian capabilities in this field at national and regional levels (Suez Canal region).

The research conclusions and recommendations can be summarized, m the following: -> The importance of integration renewable energy m the future urban development strategy in order to create communities with sustainable development, knowing that Egypt has many resources in this field. -> The importance of establishing a national project that integrates the principles and guidelines demonstrating how to use and integrate renewable energy in all national and urban development sectors.

-> The need for establishing a renewable institutional framework at both the national and regional levels, gathering all the sectors, which are concerned with topics such as renewable energy, regional policy and urban development.
