Abstract

This study was carried out at the Experimental Farm ofMatten Company, located in West Nubaria region (80 km apart of Alexandria), during two successive seasons of 1998/1999, 1999/2000.

Melia azedarach L., Populus nigra L., Taxodium disticum Rich. transplants (One- year-old) were presented as promising timber trees in this region to study the effect of fertilization, irrigation treatments and their interaction on vegetative growth, chemical composition and wood propetiies of them. The used soil was sandy, containing 88.4% sand, 4.0% silt, 7.6% clay and 0.33% organic matter.

NPK Fetiilization rates used were: control = 0:0:0 kg feddan- 1 year- 1, F1 = 30: 60: 30 kg feddan- 1 year- 1, F2= 60: 120: 60kg feddan- 1 year- 1 and F3= 120: 240: 120 kg feddan- 1 year- 1. The NPK fertilizers were applied as ammonium sulfate (20.5 % N), calcium super phosphate (15% P205) and potassium sulfate (48% K20). Rates for the individual tree were calculated by dividing the fertilizer

amount per feddan by the number of trees (around 1000 tree feddan

l ). However, the fertilizer was added in three equal applications after
45, 105, and 165 days from planting for the two seasons.

liTigation treatments were done throughout drip irrigation system from first June till first of December. Three levels of irrigation were applied in this study as follows, Low = 8 liters tree- 1 days- 1, Medium
= 16 liters tree- 1 days- 1and High= 24 liters tree- 1 days- 1. The obtained results could be summarized as follows:
