BEHAVIOUR AND DESIGN OF CONCRETE-FILLED STEEL TUBE COLUMNS

Mahmoud Mohamed Elsayed Marzuk;

Abstract

6.1 Summary
The behavior and design of concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns under concentric and eccentric loads are studied. A nonlinear finite element model (FEM) using the multi-purpose FE program ANSYS has been developed. The results obtained from the FEM are compared to those obtained from recent experimental ones available in literature. The comparison indicated that the results of the FEM well agree with the experimental results.

A parametric study has been conducted over concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) members under the effect of axial load and combined action of axial load and bending moment. Axially loaded columns of six different steel square cross-sections were studied. The effect of flat width-to-thickness ratio, steel yield strength and concrete compressive strength has been investigated. Another parametric study has been conducted on CFST member under the effect of axial load and bending moment. For this purpose, four different steel RHS are used. The effect of the same parameters previously mentioned is studied.

The results obtained from the numerical analysis are compared to those recommended by different design codes of practice. This comparison showed that different codes of practice give different recommendations which also contradict the behavior recorded based on the current numerical analysis.
