Emergency Peripartum Hystrectomy in Ain Shams Maternity Hospital in Last 3 years (2011-2013). a Retrospective Review

Samir Ahmed Asem Abdel Samie;

Abstract

EPH is the most dramatic operation in modern obstetrics and is generally performed when all conservative measures have failed to achieve haemostasis in the setting of life threatening hemorrhage. The unplanned nature of the surgery and the need for performing it expeditiously, compound matters. Moreover the acute loss of blood renders the patient in a less than ideal condition to undergo emergency surgical intervention.
In the current study, 107 cases were complicated by emergency peripartum hysterectomy, 25 cases after vaginal deliveries and 82 after caesarean deliveries from 2011 to 2013 years.
Only 97 cases were included in this study, from which the study data were collected and documented, while 10 files were missed.
Abnormal placentation (placenta accreta and placenta previa) was the commonest cause of EPH in our hospital, in 61 cases in this study.
Bladder and ureteric injuries were the most common intraoperative complication, 14 cases were complicated with urinary tract injuries (14.4%).
