Abstract


Inguinal hernia repau IS one of the oldest and most common operations in the history of medicine. Recent studies from the National Center for Health Statistics show that approximately 750,000 groin herniorrhaphies are completed annually in the United States. More than 80% of these operations involve the use of mesh prosthesis and are performed on an outpatient basis ( Rutkow, 1998 ).

Inguinal hernias can be congenital or acquired, and in both a family history of groin hernias is usually strongly positive. In 1804, Cooper stated that the cause of hernia was mechanical disparity between visceral pressure and the resistance of the abdominal musculature. If the first increased over the second, the abdominal wall ruptured, and a hernia emerged. He listed cough, prostatism, constipation, pregnancy, obesity and unusual exertion as causes of increased intra­ abdominal pressure and therefore, causes of hernia, however, these conditions do not cause groin hernias on their own but may be additional facilitating factors acting on the Basic etiology to bring on a hernia (Abrahamson, 1998).

Ever since Marcy, Bassini, Halsted described grom herniorrhaphies more than a century ago, all modifications of their techniques have had the common disadvantage of tension on the suture line.
