SOME STUDIES ON FROZEN COWS AND BUFFALO BULL SEMEN

Abstract

The present study was conducted on 1792 cows (Balady and crossbred) and 1068 buffalo-cows owned by the farmers at seven villages in Ismailia governorate. The objectives were to investigate the effect of thawing regime, seasons and inseminators on the post-thaw semen parameters and fertility of frozen bovine semen. A highly significant (P<O.O1) differences in the parameters of sperm motility, live sperm as well as acrosomal integrity for semen thawed at 38 °C I 30 sec and incubated in the thawing bath for 3 hours. For bull semen post thaw motility averaged 47.6 ± 4.3 at Ohr and 3.2±2.0 after 3 hours incubation in the thawing bath. For buffalo-semen the corresponding values were 59.2±2.04 and 11.4±5.04 respectively. Post-thaw live sperm percentages were 52.6±4.8 at Ohr respectively and 6.8±2.3 for bull semen compared to 62.6±4.4 and 17±3.09 for buffalo semen. Similarly the percentage of intact acrosome averaged. 79.4±3.6 for bull­ semen compared to 75±2.9 and 53.2±2.9 for buffalo-semen.
