Non‐Invasive positive Pressure Ventilation (NIPPV)
Mohamed Hassan Hamed Hend;
Abstract
This review of literature discusses the use of non invasive ventilation.
The term NIV refers to the application of artificial ventilation without
any conduit access to the airway i.e without an endotracheal or
tracheostomy tube.
It has been shown to be very effective in the management of acute
respiratory failure as in case of acute exacerbation of COPD and also in
cardiogenic pulmonary edema as well as long term therapy in case of
chronic respiratory failure e.g chronic COPD and respiratory muscles
affection like posttraumatic paralysis of respiratory muscle (cervical
injury) or myasthenia gravis. It can be also used as a supportive step in
the post extubation period.
NIV can be applied at the hospital where different forms of ventilators
are available as well as at home (domiciliary) where a special and
portable ventilator can be available as a part of management of some
patients like chronic COPD and Obstrsructive Sleep Apnea syndrome
