Study Of The Serum Amylin In Liver Cirrhosis With Diabetes Mellitus

Seham Fathy Yacoub;

Abstract

In the present work, we measured the plasma amylin and C peptide levels in fifty subjects divided into 4 groups, 20 patients (12 males and 8 females) with liver cirrhosis and diabetes mellitus, 10 cirrhotic patients (8 males and 2 females) with normal glucose tolerance, 10 diabetic patients (2 males and 8 females) without cirrhosis, and I 0 healthy subjects (6 males and 4 females) without cirrhosis and without diabetes.

Subjects were subjected to history taking, and clinical examination, investigations to diagnose liver cirrhosis, fasting, I hour, 2 hour blood sugar estimation, basal C-peptide and plasma amylin levels.

Our results showed that C-peptide was highly significantly increased (P < O.OI) in cirrhotic patients with or without diabetes, and in diabetic patients, compared to the control group, which indicates peripheral hyperinsulinemia.

As regards the plasma amylin level, our results showed increased plasma amylin level which was highly significant (P < O.OI) in patients with liver cirrhosis and diabetes mellitus, and patients with liver cirrhosis and normal glucose tolerance, but non significant increase (P > 0.05) in diabetic patients without cirrhosis, compared to the control group.
