The Outcome Evaluation of Bipolar Mood Disorder In A Sample of Egyptian Patients
Ahmed Mohamed Elsayed Mansour;
Abstract
Clinicians and theorists have long regarded bipolar mood disorder to have a remitting course and a relatively favorable outcome .Manic-depressive illness had generally good prognosis with typically complete return to normal functioning between episodes. In the re" nt years, however, investigators have challenge this belief as evidence has begun to suggest that many bipolar mood disorders patients have recurrent episodes and do not have such favorable courses as was once believe.
Although it has been shown that the outcome of schizophrenia in
developing countries is better than in developed countries, however it can be attributed to psycho-social factors and less taxing for work in developing countries, but few studies has been done regarding the outcome of bipolar mood disorder in developing countries .Our aim is to study the different types of the outcomes of bipolar mood disorder, and probable predictors of the outcome . The outcome of bipolar mood disorder is not good as was once believed, There are possible preventable predicators of poor outcome in bipolar mood disorders.
In Eb')'Pt adults between age of 18-60 years constitute about 28,606,000
I.e. 47% of the total population as shown in the statistical yearbook for 1996 census . Since the life-time prevalence of the bipolar disorder averages 1%, but in other recent study by sugsted that it may reach 3-8% so the number of cases mostly exceed 286.060 individuals will experience this disorder in this age group , As bipolar disorder affects individuals in their productive years, it would lead to enonnous direct and indirect costs. This . stndy may shed lighon understanding the outcome of bipolar disorder and its predictors and hence develop better preventions strategies for bipolar disorder, which are of ut-most importance in a developing country with limited resources like Egypt.
Bipolar mood disorders involve pervasive and persistent disturbance m mood, accompanied by characteristic changes in sleep, appetite, sexual function,
