STUDY OF WATER HAMMER IN PIPE LINES
Hassan Ahmed Hassan Hawam;
Abstract
Water hammer phenomena, taking into consideration both p1pe wall axial motion as well as outsidefriction damping, have been analyzed analytically and numerically. The following results were obtained:
1- A complete set of dimensionless parameters governing these phenomena was obtained
2- A criterion that determines whether coupling needs to be considered or not was g1ven
3- Estimates of maximum pressure and stress were analytically obtained for a simple, but relevant, case were derived
4- Different coupling mechanisms were elucidated using analytical results, and confirmed by numerical simulations. All characteristics of the shape of pressure and stress signals were explained
5- Novel numerical techniques were proposed (post-interpolation and wave tracking) in the framework of the method of characteristics that considerably improves its precision
6- Effects of different parameters were numerically explored.
7-lt. was shown that increasing outside friction damping coetTicient reduces maximum pressure and stress as long as it is kept small. The trend is reversed
for higher values of 1;, Hence an optimum value of s exists which is of importance for engineering pipe design.
