ARRANGHMENT OF CABLES IN CABLES STAYED BRIDGES
MOHAMED EL-TANTAWY EL-MADAWY AWAD;
Abstract
The main aim of the present work is to investigate the arrangement of cables in cable"stayed bridges. Historical remarks, configuration, and structural advantages of cable-stayed bridges are included. Method of minimizing the total potential energy (TPE) using the conjugate gradient (CG) technique to predict the static response of cable-stayed bridges is introduced. Time domain analysis by expanding the method of minimizing the total potential energy to include dynamic loads and responses is presented.
The previous analysis procedure was employed to predict the structural behaviour of three different cables arrangement in cable-stayed bridges. The harp, fan, and radiating shapes were considered during the analysis. The influence of changing the pylon height relative to the distance between the two pylons (HJL), types of connections between the pylon and floor beams (four cases was taken into consideration), and changing the initial tension by
10% and 20% in the cables have been taken as studied parameters in this
work.
Then, the effect of the static and dynamic steady state wind loads on the three different arrangements of cables is considered in this work by studying the structural performance of the cable-stayed bridges, involving the deformations and internal forces. The results are demonstrated in graphs. The
Finally, the connection type case B (The intersection between floor beams and pylons are pinned, while the pylon bases are fixed and other supports are rollers) with radiating shape of cables arrangement is considered as the best, and the responses of fan and radiating shapes are close to each other.
