ROLE OF PET/CT IN ASSESMENT OF RECURRENT OVARIAN TUMORS

Mostafa Ibrahim Mohamed Hegab;

Abstract

PET scan opened a new field in clinical oncologic imaging. Originally, PET lacks anatomic information. Integrated PET/CT acquires both metabolic and anatomic imaging data using a single device and provides precise anatomic localization of suspicious areas of increased FDG uptake. Hybrid 18F-FDG PET/CT could represent a useful diagnostic modality in the characterization of adnexal masses. PET/CT has been helpful in accurate localization of small areas of increased radiotracer activity that would have been difficult or not possible to localize on PET images alone. It also helps in distinguishing structures that normally show high metabolic activity from those with abnormally increased activity. PET/CT combines the advantages of the excellent functional information provided by PET and the superb spatial and contrast resolution of CT. Combination between PET/CT and CA-125 tumor marker yields a sensitivity of 94%–98%.
