ECOLOGICAL STUDIES ON SOME AQUATIC DIPTERA AROUND QENA CITY (EGYPT)

Khalid Said Mohmmed Osman;

Abstract

Aquatic dipterous insects were surveyed over a period of one year to obtain a well background about populations and abundance of the different aquatic dipteran taxa. The present study was perfo ed on five stations, four of which are closed systems and one opened system. The four closed systems are two wells (M,S), one marsh (TS), and one wide pond (D). The opened system is represented by channel (T).

Three techniques were used for collecting samples : aquatic light trap, conical hydrobiotic net, and sweeping aquatic net. The aquatic light trap and the conical hydrobiotic net were used at stations (TS, M, S). While the sweeping net was used at stations (D, T).

During the present work, the water-pH was measured by using BIBY pH meter. In addition, concentration of five elements from five field water systems was estimated by x-ray fluorescence in the Aluminium Company of Egypt.

Twenty two species belonging to eighteen genera and six families were collected. The families are Ceratopogonidae, Chironomidae, Culicidae, Ephydridae, Psychodidae, and Syrphidae. Indentification of material was carried out through :
1 - rearing marked larvae to adults.
