Iman Mohamed Atteia;

Abstract

The present study was conducted on 40 women classified into 4 groups:

Group I: lean women with the diagnosis ofPCOS Group II: obese women with the diagnosis of PCOS Group III: lean women regularly menstruating
Group IV: obese women regularly menstruating

All studied women were subjected to medical history taking through clinical examination, measurement of BMI, waist and hip circumferences and estimation of serum levels of: leptin, insulin, free testosterone, LH, and FSH using ELISA technique.

The aim of this thesis was to assess the potential contribution of leptin and insulin in determining the pathophysiology ofPCOS.

The highest value of serum leptin was found in group II (obese PCO) (26.51± 7.03) ng/ml) decreasing in group IV (obese control) (20.70± 2.74) and least in group I & III (10±6.6 ng/ml) & (5.2± 7 ng/ml) respectively.

Statistical analysis revealed a significant difference between group I as compared to group III (P< 0.05), and in group II as compared to group IV (P< 0. 0 I) as regards serum leptin level.
