Ahmed Abdul Aziz Ramadan;

Abstract

From the above data we found that prophylactic treatment of Heterotopic ossification markedly affect the rate of its occurrence especially with high risk patients.
This prophylactic treatment can be pharmacological treatment or radiotherapy or both with no clinical difference occurrence rate of Heterotopic ossification.
In the studies that were published in the last ten years according to this systematic review time period; no studies were using radiotherapy in their protocol. That may reflect the tendency to use pharmacological treatment rather than radiotherapy. The fact that pharmacological treatment by itself is analgesic agents, May interprets that way. Also, the easy way to give the treatment without any special equipment may support the use of pharmacological treatment.
Combined treatment of indomethacin and radiotherapy gives the lowest rate of Heterotopic ossification among all studies. Also, no reported side effects in the same study belong to this treatment regimen.
The longer period of treatment postoperatively shows no significant change in Heterotopic ossification occurrence rates. But, it increased its side effects especially with non selective NSAIDs group.
