Push enterostopy as an investigation of small intestinal diseases

Abstract


EntEroscopy is a small bowel endoscopy. Previously, the small bowel was explored using a disinfected pediatric colonscope. The sonde enteroscope was the first to develop but become more and more limited in it's indications, while the push enteroscope; which is a long gastroscope, is now well tolerated, accepted modality for evaluation of patients with small bowel disease, including those with undiagnosed causes for gastrointestinl bleeding, chronic diarrhea, and radiological abnormalities.

ThE aim of this workto evaluate the role and efficacy of push-enteroscopy in diagnosing causes of unexplained chronic diarrhea, obscure GIT bleeding and to study the changes in small bowel in patients with liver cirrhosis, oesphgeal varices and portal gastropathy.

This study was conducted on 60 patients presented to the medical department, Ain Shams University Hospital, Faculty
•of Medicine, complaining of :

Group 1: 20 patient with obscure GIT bleeding, iron deficiency anemia with positive occult blood in stool.

Group II: 20 patients with chronic diarrhea of unknown cause.

Group Ill: 20 patients with liver cirrhosis, oesphageal varices, and portal gastropathy.
