STUDIES ON THE IMPROVEMENT OF CUCUMBER PRODUCTION IN THE SUMMER SEASON
Soliman Ahmed Ali Omran;
Abstract
The experiments were carried out on cucumber Amera II and Sweet cnmch hybrids during the late summer seasons of 1995 and 1996 in the experimental farm of Faculty of Agriculture, Kafr El-Sheikh, Tanta University. The main objective of this research was to study the effect of mist by water (operation stmted at 10.00 AM to 4.00
PM by the rate of 5 min/hour) and without mist and three treatments of rice hulls mulch by a layer of 3-5 em thickness. The rice hulls treatments were complete row, half row and without mulch.
The treatments were arranged in split-plot design with four replications. Mist
treatments were distributed as main plots, hybrids were assigned randomly in sub plot, and mulching treatment were arranged at random in sub-sub plot.
Cucumber seeds were sown on May Is', in both years, oboth sides of the ridge,
the ridge width was 120 em and 6 meters in length. The plant spacings were 45 em.
The experiments were conducted inside the greenhouse covered with polyethylene (a UV stabilized PE with thickness 200 un) and its sides were covered with insect proof nets and airing by 36%.
The study included vegetative growth, growth attributes, flowering, fruit set,
fruit yield and quality and chemical analysis of the fifth leaf from growing top. Air temperatur.e and relative humidity were measured inside and outside the greenhouse. Also, soil temperature around the plants were recorded.
Results are summarized as follows:
1. Climatic conditions:
1.1. Effect of mist:
Mist inside the greenhouse decreased air temperature about 6.3°C and 4.2"C, compared with unmist and open field, respectively, in the first year and about 4.1 and
2. I °C in the second year.
Mist increased air relative humidity about 14.5% and 17. 9%, compared with the unmist and open field, respectively, in the first year, and about 4.5% and I 0.3%, in the second year.
1.2. Effect of mulching and mist on soil temperature:
Rice hulls mulch or mist decreased oil temperature about 5.3 °C at 14.00 PM in the first year and about 6.1 °C in the second year, compared with the bare soil or unmist in both years.
1.3. Effect of rice hulls mulch on EC and pH:
Mulching decreased the EC and pH, compared with the bare soil in both years.
