.Retrospective study of postoperative pain management in pediatrics
Mohamed Sayed Ahmed El-kashlan;
Abstract
The records of 385 infants and children admitted to Pediatric Surgery
Department at Tanta University Hospital in three years, between the I st of
si
January 1998 and 31 fh of December 2000 were reviewed. All those patients
underwent elective surgical procedures of lower abdominal, genito-urinary or lower extremities operations.
A noticeable increase in the use of caudal blockade in infants and children was observed over the three years period surveyed (33.3%, 50% and
65.36% of cases each year respectively).
The use of acetaminophen and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs still play an active part in the management of postoperative pain in pediatrics (58.82%, 42.31% and 32.68% of cases each year).
Intravenous opioids were used only m 8.82%, 7.69% and 1.96% of cases each year.
Regional blockade with local anesthetics (bupivacaine, lidocaine or ropivacaine) for peri operative pain relief was associated with satisfactory results however, pain may be troublesome once the block has worn off, so adjuvant analgesic therapy is essential.
