PRE-STRESSED CONCRETE FRAMES ANALYSIS AND DESIGN SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT

Elsayed Mohammed Elsayed Elsheikh;

Abstract

Using efficient design softwares will save considerable time and efforts that are
being spent every day in manual design and check of stresses of reinforced concrete
sections. It will also minimize the probability of errors and makes the investigation of
multiple alternatives for s specific project convenient and fast. Locally developed
design softwares should be much more beneficial than foreign, imported, ones for the
Arab world countries as they would follow the local design specifications and would
also be much less expensive.
The thesis adopted the stiffness matrix method in the structural analysis process
and the requirements for the Egyptian code of practice (ECP 203) in the design of
prestressed concrete frames. This assembling of analysis and design procedures, in
details, is useful for future use, and the program could be used in the development of
similar and more advanced programs.
The developed program, which works under windows, provides user friendly
interfaces and simplifies the pre-processing and post-processing data. Numeric and
graphical forms of output results are available as well.
The program runs the analysis to any frame structures, but performs the design
for prestressed frames only.
The examples solved manually and compared with the developed program
results verified that the later is powerful software for analyzing and designing
prestressed concrete frames.
User can assign prestressed cable to a part of a frame not on the full length
(partial cable), which not existing on prestressed softwares like Concise Beam and
Adapt-PT, in addition user performs drawing easily with the mouse not by dialog
wizards used in other softwares.
8.2. Recommendations
There is an apparent shortage in local computer programs that serve in the field
of structural engineering. Reinforced concrete design is one of the subjects that still
need special computer programs, which abide by the Egyptian code of practice.
Ph.D. and M.Sc. research works that investigate the design of reinforced
concrete sections and the development of such programs are relatively few.
Additional concentrated efforts should be directed towards this kind of studies.
The under-graduate courses should contain programming studies even elective
courses to prepare engineers can develop softwares not only can use it.

The previous computer programs that have been developed through postgraduate
studies in the Faculty of Engineering – Cairo University are not generally
available. It is believed that softwares have the same importance of the printed
materials, so it is suggested to establish an electronic library to fully document those
programs. Some of these programs can be used and other can be enlarged or
improved.
The task of preparing computer programs for structural design could lead to the
incorporation of computer programs into the Egyptian Code of Practice itself.
The Egyptian Code of Practice is written in Arabic and this is a good thing to
have a code written in our native language, but in fact some topics are not clear
enough to understand, so foreign codes specially the American Code may be used
because it is similar to the Egyptian one. It is suggested to write the Egyptian code in
English or even another one in English in addition to the Arabic copy.
It could be greatly useful if the Egyptian Code of Practice establish a committee
responsible for developing sotwares that follow the local code.
8.3. Suggestions for future study
This thesis and the accompanied computer program, discuss the analysis of
frame structures and the design of prestressed concrete frames, it can be extended to:
 Extend the application program to include other types of structural
elements such as walls, slabs, foundations and columns.
 Include other common used codes in the design process.
 Modify the analysis process by using more advanced analytical methods
such as Finite Element Method or Boundary Element.
 Develop internet site related to the program in which user can download
the program updates.
