BEHAVIOR OF CONCRETE ENCASED STEEL COMPOSITE COLUMNS UNDER UNIAXIAL LOAD

Mohamed Magdy Mohamed Abdel Wahab;

Abstract

This study investigates the behavior of concrete encased steel composite columns subjected
to uniaxial compression straining actions. The experimental program consists of eleven
specimens with total dimensions of 160 x 300 x 1900-mm; the selected schemes were
specially chosen to consider the shear connectors effect, superposition analysis, derivation of
exact interaction diagram, internal ties influence on ductility and strength, the composite
action between the two materials.Comparisons of different codes approaches for the
concrete encased steel composite columns have been introduced with the explanation of the
experimental results taking into considerations the ultimate strength ,ductility, strain energy ,
and flexure stiffness. It was concluded that the number of shear connecters is directly
proportional to ultimate strength and ductility of the section, Also the confining effect is
directly proportional to the ductility and ultimate strength. Comparison between
experimental results and design guidelines has indicated that strain compatibility method
provides the most accurate estimations.
