Shereen Marie Zaied Abd Elgaber;

Abstract

The aim of this work was to estimate serum levels of apelin among

obese children and adolescents and to determine the relationship between these levels and blood
pressure, lipid profile and the cardiac function in
these children.
This study was a cross-sectional study that was carried out in Ain

Shams University-Children Hospital and National Research Center

(NRC), during the period between December 2011 to April 2013.

The study included 50 overweight and obese children and adolescents who diagnosed according
to BMI.
Forty age and sex matched normal healthy non obese children
participated in this study and served as controls.

Both groups were subjected to the following:

 Detailed history

 Anthropometric assessment
 Right arm sitting systolic and diastolic blood pressure

 Blood samples for determination of: Random blood sugar, Serum high ,density lipoprotein,
Serum cholesterol, Serum triglyceride (TG), Low density lipoprotein ( LDL-C), Plasma Apelin-12
level using (ELISA) and High sensitive C – Reactive protein (Hs-crp) .
 Echocardiography using (GE vivid 3 and vivid 7) to assess the following:
- Left ventricular function: thickness of interventricular septum in diastole (IVSd), thickness
of left ventricular
posterior wall in diastole (LVPWd), left v
