Abstract

ABST RACT

As a result of rapid technical and technological development, waste electric and electronic equipments (WEEE) is becoming one of the major environmental risks for its high quantity and toxicity in recent years. This study aims at recovering metals of value from wastes of electric and electronic equipment (WEEE). It finds support from the fact that e-waste would provide the material needs of these strategic metals specially the world production of these metals decline, while the e-waste is increasing. It was shown that the world quantities of WEEE may be 20 to 25 million tons per year by annual growth rate of 3–5%. The study applies different techniques to recover copper of WEEE. The method applied was performed in sequential block diagram experimental. It starts by separation of the waste materials followed by shredding, sieving and sizing. Plastic content was separated by floatation or by thermal decomposition. The nonsoluble fraction was subjected to magnetic separation and followed by acid leaching using mineral acids. Alternatively, the metals in e-waste was soaked in ammonium hydroxide solution for several days to dissolve copper. Copper tetrammonia was used as a stock to prepare nanoparticles of the powder by reducing with reducing agents in cold conditions. The nondissolved fraction left after treatment was used to separate different metal values by leaching in mineral acids. According to this method the elements copper, nickel, zinc, tin and magnesium were determined.
