Abstract

Hemorrhoids is one of the oldest diseases suffered by man kind, although hemorrhoids are almost never life threatening, but can cause discomfort and deserve examinations and treatment. The incidence of hemorrhoids increases with age, its occurrence i s maximum in fourth decade of life. They are predominantly seen in males than in females. It occurs more commonly in officials, housewives and students. More than 70% are found to have a mixed diet.In this study we found that bleeding and prolapse continued to be the commonest and major symptoms for hemorrhoids. In this study we try to discuss different treatment modalities of hemorrhoids starting by conservative treatments for first and second degree and as adjuvant therapy in grade three and four. Other lines for treatment are the office techniques (out patient treatment) for first, second and some third degree hemorrhoids like rubber band, sclerotherapy, cryotherapy, bi-polar, direct current therapy and infrared photocoagulation. Rubber band and sclerotherapy are the most favored out patient treatments. Cryotherapy is not popular as it used to be, since patients acceptance seems to be better with rubber band and sclerotherapy. Hemorrhoidectomy (Milligan Morgan and Ferguson) is the most widely used method for surgical treatment and still consider standard method. In this study we try to discuss recent treatment modalities for hemorrhoids like stapled hemorrhoidectomy, Doppler guided hemorrhoidal artery ligation and laser hemorrhoidectomy. Stapled hemorrhoidectomy though becoming popular, cannot be recommended for all patients in view of its high cost.
